SpikeTyke

SpikeTyke, a drill jig for installing 5th string spikes

The SpikeTyke drill jig enables the installation of spikes with consistent precision. Also, I wanted users to avoid the worst-case scenario of drilling right through the neck (been there, done that...). Therefore, the Micro Engineering spikes that come with the kit have been shortened, allowing shorter holes to be drilled. Also, these modified spikes probably have the 'flattest heads in the industry' — they will never interfere with fretting the 5th string.

Please note that the spikes installed with this jig will be facing ***INWARD***. This is my personal preference, because I have noticed that on some banjos with spikes facing outward, the string is difficult to hook under because when bending the string before being hooked it tends to slip off the frets' ends.

"I have been using the Tyke off and on for the last 2 months and have found it useful and accurate. In total, I have set up 3 new banjos with the tyke (....). It is a well thought out piece of equipment. I found it especially helpful in aligning the spikes, since when drilling freehand it is easy to mess up the angle. I also liked the added protection against potential drill bit breakage from misaligned bits."

The SpikeTyke Kit contains:
  • SpikeTyke drill jig
  • 0.8 / 0.75 mm drill bits
